Western Clydesdales and Major Partner, JRS Group Gallop into BMD Premiership

Published Fri 06 Oct 2023

Toowoomba, 5th October 2023 — In an exciting development for women's rugby league in Queensland, the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) has announced the expansion of the BMD Premiership for the 2024 season, welcoming the Western Clydesdales as one of the new entrants. This significant step forward is made possible through the generous support of their Major Sponsor, JRS Group.

After thorough consultation with stakeholders and a meticulous review of club applications, the QRL Board has approved the inclusion of two outstanding teams for the upcoming season. The Western Clydesdales and the Sunshine Coast Falcons will join the ranks of the BMD Premiership, forming a formidable 10-team competition alongside the Brisbane Tigers, Burleigh Bears, Central Queensland Capras, Mackay Cutters, Norths Devils, Souths Logan Magpies, Tweed Seagulls, and Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

This expansion of the BMD Premiership aligns with the QRL's visionary three-year plan, designed to match the statewide footprint of the esteemed Hostplus Cup competition. In 2025, the Northern Pride and Ipswich Jets are expected to enter the competition, followed by the Townsville Blackhawks and Redcliffe Dolphins in 2026, contingent upon a thorough assessment of club readiness.

Shane Sullivan, CEO of the Western Clydesdales, expressed his excitement about the team's inclusion in the BMD Premiership: "This is a momentous occasion for the Western Clydesdales and the broader rugby league community in our region. We are immensely grateful to the QRL for their support, and we are proud to have JRS Group as our Major Sponsor for this exciting journey."

JRS Group, a leading name in the manufacturing world, has demonstrated their commitment to promoting women's rugby league through their partnership with the Western Clydesdales. Their sponsorship will provide the team with invaluable resources to achieve their goals and make a lasting impact in the competition.

Glenn Ottaway, QRL's general manager of pathways and performance, emphasized the significance of the BMD Premiership in women's rugby league: "The BMD Premiership remains the primary competition for nurturing talent, and it plays a pivotal role in the selection of the Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons team. Our expansion plans are aligned with the growing participation of female players, and we aim to further expand the game at a national level, including the addition of at least one more Queensland NRLW team in the near future."

Ottaway expressed confidence in both the Sunshine Coast Falcons and the Western Clydesdales as they prepare for their debut seasons in the BMD Premiership in 2024: "We believe that these new additions will not only enhance the competition but also expand the game's presence outside of the southeast region. Both clubs have demonstrated exceptional dedication and have strong foundations in their respective areas. We commend their efforts and eagerly anticipate their development."

As the QRL continues to promote women's rugby league and provide opportunities for talented athletes to shine on the big stage, the 2024 BMD Premiership season promises to be action-packed. The competition is set to commence in March 2024, where the Western Clydesdales, proudly supported by JRS Group, will make their mark in this prestigious competition.
