Duncan Thompson Book

We are proud to announce the launch of this locally published book, the text of which was written by Duncan Thonpson some fifty years ago and until now has never been published. Duncan Thompson is a legend of Toowoomba, Queensland, New South Wales and Australian Rugby League.

His achievements as a player, coach, selector, administrator, business man and citizen are well documented in the text of this book, supported by almost fifty photos covering mainly the period of 1915 to 1956.

Duncan Thompson was captain and coach of the all conquering Toowoomba team in the early 1920's which was dubbed the Galloping Clydesdales. It would therefore be fair to say he should be considered as the "father" of our Clydesdales tradition.

This great tradiition was further enhanced under his coaching in the 1950's when the Clydesdsales won six consecutive Bulimba Cups against Brisbane and Ipswich. Duncan had perfected a playing style that he called Contract Football.

Publisher Derek Schlyder, a life-long fan of Duncan Thompson, has published the book free of charge and Duncan Thompson’s descendants have gifted copyright of the book to the Toowoomba Rugby League.

The cost of the book is $20 and all proceeds will be shared equally between Toowoomba Rugby League and Western Clydesdales. Funds will be used to advance and promote Rugby League in the local area.
