Weekend wrap-up v Sunshine Coast and Souths-Logan

Published Sun 20 Mar 2022

There were some very close games and others not so as we had a busy weekend with teams playing Sunshine Coast and Souths-Logan.

UNDER 16S

It was a tough outing for our Cyril Connell Cup squad as we suffered a 44-6 loss to Sunshine Coast at Maroochydore.

The Falcons got on top early with a try in the third minute and built on that advantage to hold a 28-0 lead at half-time.

Winger Lucas Paynter scored our only try in the second half in what proved to be a consolation try as Sunshine Coast ran away with a strong win.

A late penalty goal from Brayden Falvey helped us secure a 24-24 draw with Sunshine Coast in the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup clash at Maroochydore.

Falvey got us off to a great start on the road, crossing for a try in just the second minute to get us out to an early lead.

Further tries to Bailey Rathmell and Bailey Nash helped us hold a promising 18-4 lead at half-time.

Each team scored just after the break as we held a 22-10 lead after 40 minutes.

But two tries to Sunshine Coast in quick succession saw them level the scores at 22-22 before they slotted a penalty goal with six minutes to play to take a 24-22 lead.

Falvey held his nerve to then land his own penalty goal with three minutes left to see both teams split the competition points.

The Clydesdales are still undefeated after three Mal Meninga Cup games following the draw.

UNDER 19 WOMEN

It was another close game in the Harvey Norman Under 19 Women's clash between the Clydesdales and Sunshine Coast as they finished with an 18-18 draw.

The Falcons held a slender 8-6 lead at half-time after scoring two tries to one in the first stanza.

It was then two tries apiece in the second half as the accurate goalkicking of halfback Sienna Norris helped us record a draw despite scoring three tries to Sunshine Coast's four.

The result sees the Clydesdales finish the under 19 women's campaign undefeated with two wins and a draw from our three games.

UNDER 21S

Our under 21s look to round one of the Hastings Deering Colts season after a 66-18 loss to Souths-Logan in our final trial game.

We took an understrength squad to Davies Park to face the Magpies and they were up against it.

It was a tough hit-out but one that helps prepare us for our opening round match against Brisbane Tigers on April 2.
